Pliny the Elder, like Homer, reminds us the famous Mileto's flower, speaking proudly about its fragrance. In the Christian culture the rose is associated with martyrs and the Holy Virgin. According to the founders of the Church the rose of Eden originally had no thorns, but these would have appeared on the plant to remember Mankind of its falls and its sins. The holy Virgin, who remained without sin, is often called the "rose without thorns". Known and cultivated for their beauty and scent, roses became the symbol of the Mother of Christ. This flower, when not directly linked to the representation of the Mother Mary, does not have a particular meaning in the 19th century funerary art.
