Pine cone

Pine cone

Scheda

Pine cones share the same symbolic values as their tree. The wood’s strength, the perennial leaves and the resin symbolize vital strength and immortality. In ancient Greece it was associated to Dyonisus, the god of death and rebirth. The “tyrsus”, Dyonisus’ wand has been represented many times with a pine cone at the top, which is a funerary symbol that were used in Roman art. The pine cone was represented during the Romanesque on architectural features such as capitals and archivolts, however, it was not represented during the 19th century.
