Archaeologist and paleontologist. A pioneer of modern archaeology, he excavated works in Rome and Bologna ,where he taught archaeology in the Faculty of Liberal Arts. He contributed to the founding of the Civic Museum of Bologna, starting in 1881, he became head of the ancient department and he scientificially organised the collections. In his many publications he attempted to synthesize Italy’s pre- and proto- history. He is buried at the Certosa Cemetery of Bologna, Cloister VI, west portico, exterior side n. 15.
