According to the early Christian funerary inscriptions, the anchor has frequently been considered one of the oldest symbols of Christian art. The anchor is a weight that guarantees safety and then it is a symbol of steadiness and faith. It represents Christian faith certainty. Its bond to the sea recalls other Christian symbols such as the fish and sums up the idea of the Church as the ship led by Christ and Peter. The anchor is also a symbol of hope.
