Linked with the Passion of Christ, in the common iconography it can be accompanied by other instruments of the Christian Passion as the pliers, the sponge, the lance, the nails etc. It’s a symbol of rare nineteenth-century funerary art. You can find it in the hands of weeping figures as a symbol of their grief.
